With properties as varied as city life itself, you’ll find everything from ultra-modern studios in brand new blocks, to open loft-style apartments in some of the city’s revived industrial gems. From the lively main drag of West Street and Division Street, to the cosmopolitan riverside area around Kelham Island, there’s an ever-evolving choice of places to eat, drink, shop and relax, from art galleries to cinemas; theatres to public gardens (famed for green space, Sheffield won’t let the city centre get in the way of its leafy retreats). Take your pick, from surprisingly affordable new builds and renovations, to Sheffield’s ultimate penthouse apartments right in the heart of city life.
Just two miles from the city centre, you’ll meet S8 – Meersbrook and Woodseats –dominated by Victorian terraces and semi-detached villas. Meersbrook’s leafy streets lead to Meersbrook Park (the walk to the top is worth the view). Woodseats’ high street delivers on every front, against the backdrop of the vast Graves Park. These are established districts, mostly comprising Victorian houses, from small terraces to large parkside villas, with an increasing number of smart new builds as it grows in popularity. Schools are good, transport connections are plentiful, amenities are great and S8 is enjoying a growth spurt with some brilliant new eateries and bars opening on busy Chesterfield Road.
The population in S11 is a diverse one – large Victorian villas, good schools and endless parks attract families, but lots live here for the lifestyle. Because this beautifully green suburb is also brimming with pubs, cafes, restaurants and independent shops, ranging from the bohemian to the cosmopolitan. A handful of new, super-slick apartment blocks has arrived in recent years, but the area is still more notable for grand stone villas in rambling grounds, as well as a really good stock of sought-after post-war semis and Victorian terraces, all with easy access to amenities and good schools. Reaching into the Peak District, S11 is one of the most popular residential areas in Sheffield.
Comprising three vibrant but laid-back family-friendly pockets of Sheffield. In Sharrow and Nether Edge, homes range from high-ceilinged apartments in stately Victorian villas, and affordable terraces, to grand, stone-built family homes with grounds. The main thoroughfare, Abbeydale Road, offers the diverse mix of bakeries, shops, pubs, bars, cafés, antique shops, the recently-restored picture house and ethnic produce that makes the area so popular. Traditional housing continues into Millhouses, but with a good range of post-war semi-detached housing added. The area’s great for families who enjoy good schools and the wonderful park with its boating lake, tennis courts, playground and café.
In affluent S10, you’ll find everything from mid-century apartment blocks and new-build townhouses, through Victorian high-ceilinged stone terraces, to the occasional ‘super-home’ – exceptional architect-designed houses. There’s a mix of residents too – a popular student district, it’s also great for families. The jewel in the S10’s crown is the wonderful Botanical Gardens, and rather grand Ranmoor and Fulwood. Well-connected to the city centre, a short drive in the opposite direction will have you out on the moors in minutes, with parts of S10 stretching into the stunning Peaks.
Dore and Totley teeter on the brink of Derbyshire in the southwest of Sheffield, and offer a real balance of town and country life and a range of homes, from surprisingly affordable terraces and modest post-war housing, to historic halls set in rolling grounds, as well as a growing number of small, new apartment blocks. It’s not far to the city centre, but people live here for the quiet, the proximity to open moorland, cosy pubs such as the well-known Cricket Inn, and the good schools. From the village greens of Dore and Totley, it’s almost impossible to imagine that you’re just six miles from the city centre. That’s what makes it unique and attracts the lucky residents who call it home.
